When Verne Hamblet Weld was born on July 18, 1899, in Canaan, New Hampshire, his father, Fred, was 29 and his mother, Nora, was 21. He had two brothers and two sisters. He served in the Mexican border between 1916 and 1917 and was recalled for overseas service on July 25, 1917. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company M, 103rd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died on September 24, 1918 and is now buried in St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. He also has a cenotaph located in Wells Cemetery, Canaan, Grafton County, New Hampshire, USA.
