Joseph Newton Smith was born in 1898 in New Hampshire. He was the son of Joseph Henry Smith and Mandana Bird Dearborn Smith. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I in Company C, 103rd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was Killed in Action on July 20, 1918 in Chateau-Thierry, France and is now buried in Woodstock Cemetery, Woodstock, Grafton County, New Hampshire, USA.
