James Rasmussen was born on March 11, 1890 in Crystal Lake, Hancock County, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I in Company B, 103rd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was Killed in Action on September 12, 1918 in St. Mihiel, France at the age of 28 and is now buried in Crystal Lake Township Cemetery, Crystal Lake, Hancock County, Iowa, USA. His name is commemorated on the Belleau Church tablet in France but his surname is inscribed as Rassmussen.
