Herbert W. Peart was born on April 11, 1894 in Australia. He had been born in Australia and his father was a colonel and chief secretary in the Salvation Army. He had completed his education in Civil Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Class of 1917) and enter the Army at the beginning of the War on 5 May 1917. He had previously been stationed at Fort Sheridan, Illinois for his training; then to Camp Custer, Michigan, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, anf Camp Mills, New York. He was promoted to 1st Lt. on 4 January 1918.
In 1915, he had been awarded the Carnegie Medal as well as $500 for his heroism Herbert W. Peart, 21. student, helped to save Ella F. Sheehan from drowning, North Long Branch, New Jersey, September 5, 1915. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a First Lieutenant in Company I, 103rd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He had arrived in France on 23 July 1918 but was killed in the last battle of the War, the day before the Armistice. He is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
