Harry Melbourn Nightingale was born on Aug 21, 1883 in Grand Lake, Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada. Harry M. Nightingale, son of Martha Nightingale, enlisted at Auburn, Maine June 5, 1917. He trained at Camp Keyes, Augusta and at Wesfield, Mass until he went overseas in Sept. 1917. On Sept. 12th, 1918, Corporal Nightingale, Co F, 103rd Infantry was leading his squard forward to attack on almost impregnable machine gun fire when he lost all but two of his men. He continued to press on until he himself fell mortally wounded. He was cited by the Commanding Gereral, the American Expedionary Forces for extra ordinary heroism in action and the Distinguished Service Cross was forwarded to his mother by the War Department. He died later in the hospital on September 14, 1918 in France at the age of 35. He is now buried in Pierce Cemetery, Mars Hill, Aroostook County, Maine, USA.
