When Earl Owen McGrath was born on June 12, 1895, in North Stratford, New Hampshire, his father, William, was 36 and his mother, Ellen, was 36. He had four brothers and five sisters. Before enlisting in the army he had been employed for five years as clerk at the F. S. Peaslee store, beginning work there while he was a student at the Laconia High School. He enlisted in June, 1917, in the 1st new Hampshire Regiment. He was sent overseas in September. He was 23 years old and was a member of Our Lady of the Lake church. Earl served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in the 103rd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was Killed in Action on July 13, 1918 in France at the age of 23 and is now buried in Saint Lamberts Cemetery, Laconia, Belknap County, New Hampshire, USA.
