Philip W. Mcgovern was the only child of his widowed mother, Mrs. Elizabeth McGovern. Private McGovern was born in Somerville, but had lived the greater part of his life in Cambridge. He graduated from St Paul’s Parochial School, and before entering the service had been employed as collector by the F. S. Hickey Publishing Co, of Boston. was a member of Company B, 103 d Infantry, A. E. P. He went to Mexico in 1916 as acting sergeant in Company E of the old 8th Regiment, and while at the border was appointed color-sergeant. It was just prior to his going to Mexico that his father, Arthur McGovern, died. Private McGovern responded to the call when the old 8th was summoned to service in the war with Germany, and sailed for France in September 1918. He died on July 20, 1918 and is now buried in Aisne-Marne American Cem., Belleau, France. His photo is from the Cambridge World War I Memorial Plaques.
