When Randolph Fitzhugh Mason was born on July 12, 1878, in Richmond City, Virginia, his father, Landon, was 37 and his mother, Lucy, was 30. He had two brothers and three sisters. He was educated at the University of Virginia and was a member of the Delta Psi Fraternity. Mason was with a machine gun company. He won his commission at the first officers' training camp at Fort Myer. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Second Lieutenant in the 103rd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was Killed in Action on July 20, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. He also has a cenotaph located in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Richmond City, Virginia, USA.
