William Hilaire Jutras was born on September 19, 1891 in Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. He was the son of Alfred D. Jutras and Martha Jacqueline Barbeau Jutras. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a First Lieutenant in Company A, 103rd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was Killed in Action on September 26, 1918 in Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-Avold, Departement de la Moselle, Lorraine, France, France at the age of 27 and is now buried in Saint Augustin Cemetery, Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously when he volunteered to carry a warning to his platoon in an attempt to keep them from being ambushed by German machine gun nests lying in wait. He succeeded and saved the platoon from annihilation. The Jutras Post 43, American Legion was named for him.
