Richard William Burns was born on March 27, 1892 in Maud, Bibb County, Alabama. He was the son of William Washington Burns and Samantha Matilda Hulin. He entered the United States Army on 5 June 1918 in Mississippi and served as a Private in the 103rd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died on June 16, 1918 in France at the age of 26 and is now buried in St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France.
