Francis Gilbert Swan was born on September 18, 1900 in East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was declared "Missing in Action" on October 23, 1918 and is commemorated on Tablets of the Missing, Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
