Russell I. Smith was born in 1893 in South Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company D, 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was Killed in Action on July 23, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France.
