Bertel Smith was born in 1889 in Denmark. He entered the military service in Connecticut and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on September 5, 1918 in France and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. He also has a cenotaph located in Hillside Cemetery, Cheshire, New Haven County, Connecticut, USA.
