Lester L. Slagle was born on December 2, 1895 in Mitchell, Davison County, South Dakota. Despite defective vision Lester was among the first to respond to his country's call. He was twice rejected, but was accepted when drafted. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Sergeant in Company D, 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died on October 19, 1918 in France at the age of 22 and is now buried in Waucoma Cemetery, Waucoma, Fayette County, Iowa, USA.
