Comments:

Samuel L. Raynor, of Willimantic, Connecticut, was slightly wounded in action at Bois de Bouresche, Chateau Thierry on July 20, 1918, and unfortunately killed in action at Hill 360, Bois D’Ormont on October 25, 1918. Samuel L. Raynor died while serving in the US Army during World War I in the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division.

Records are conflicting as to his actual date of death. The Connecticut Service Records of Men And Women In The Armed Forces Of The United States During The World War, 1917-1920, Vol III, Pp. 2990 says that he died on 25 October. However, "US, WWI Military Cablegrams - AEF and War Dept, 1917-1919" lists a cablegram from the War
Department, Paragraph 3, Reference Casualty 352, which mentioned that Private Raynor was wounded in action on October 25, the date he was reportedly killed. However, his commanding officer indicated in a correction to Headquarters that Private Samuel L. Raynor died on October 23. This conflicting date places him near trench D'Erzinjean,
which was occupied by Company L, 102nd US Inf., below Hill 360 in Bois D'Ormont.
