George J. Rau was born on March 1, 1882 in Germany. He entered the military service in Connecticut and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Major in the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. On July 25, Major Rau, followed by his orderly, was leading an attack against the Boche. A high explosive from a German gun dropped just behind him and killed both himself and his orderly. He died at the age of 36 in France and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France.
