Harland George Pfantz was born on December 16, 1886 in Marshall County, Iowa. He was the son of George Washington Pfantz and Wilhelmina Elenor Sophia Nolta Pfantz. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died on October 25, 1918 in France at the age of 31 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. The American Legion in State Center, IA is named for him. His name is also commemorated on Marshall County World War I memorial in Marshalltown, IA.
