When Robert Crowell Martin was born on June 23, 1894, his father, Crowell, was 28 and his mother, Ann, was 25. He had two brothers. He enlisted in H Co., 23rd Infantry of the N.Y. Guard on June 12, 1916. He sailed for France on May 6, 1918 and served during World War I as a Second Lieutenant in the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was Killed in Action on October 28, 1918 in France at the age of 23 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
