William McKinley Dygert was born on April 14, 1897 in Iron Gate, Alleghany County, Virginia. He was the son of P. H. Dygert and Nettie L. Dygert. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Sergeant in the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was Killed in Action on September 26, 1918 at the age of 21 and is now buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Clifton Forge, Alleghany County, Virginia, USA.
