William Barry Corbett was of Dorchester, Boston, Mass.; Graduated Harvard University, Class 1914, B.A.; He was a teacher at the Boston High School of Commerce. He was in the Company 5, 6th Provisional Training Regimant, Reserve Officer's Training School at Plattsburgh, New York, to August 15, 1917 when he received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was detailed on August 25, 1917 to the School Of Trench Warfare in Cambridge, Mass. He was assigned to Company D, 301st Infantry, 77th Division, and went overseas on July 6, 1918. Following Company L's heavy losses at Chateau Thierry, Corbett was transferred to the company on August 22, 1918 and served during the St. Mihiel drive. He was cited in regimental orders "For gallant conduct and devotion to duty in the field on October 25, 1918, while gallantly leading his platoon against a machine-gun nest in Bois d'Ormont, north of Verdun." He was killed in that action, shot in the head by a "dum-dum" exploding bullet.
