When Herman Leonard Clemmer was born on March 28, 1890, in Brownsburg, Virginia, his mother, Letitia, was 24. He had one brother and one sister. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was Killed in Action on July 22, 1918 at the age of 28 and is now buried in New Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Raphine, Rockbridge County, Virginia, USA.
