Martin Bollhorst was born on February 4, 1893 in Fayette County, Illinois. He was the son of Henry Christ Bollhorst and Sida Catherine Zimmer Bollhorst. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was declared "Missing in Action" on November 11, 1918 and is commemorated on Tablets of the Missing, Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
