James Franklin Black was born on December 31, 1893 in New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of James F. Black and Elizabeth Graham Black. James worked as a laborer in civilian life. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was Killed in Action on October 25, 1918 in France at the age of 24 and is now buried in Graceland Cemetery, New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, USA.
