Chester Buttre Winans was born on October 25, 1896 in Bergen, Hudson County, New Jersey. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Second Lieutenant in the 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died on September 12, 1918 and is now buried in St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Chester B. Winans, United States Army is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be place upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Second Lieutenant Winans distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in the Bois de Trugny, France, 23 July 1918, and by his brilliant leadership.
