John Mayne was born in 1880 in Moon Grange, Cookstown, Co. Tyrone, Ireland. entered the military service in Massachusetts enlisted in 1916. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in the Medical Detachment, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died on July 24, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
Citation:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class John Mayne (ASN: 2800), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 101st Infantry Regiment (Attached), 26th Division, A.E.F., in the Trugny Woods, near Chateau-Thierry, France, 23 July 1918. Private Mayne, although in an exposed position in the Trugny Woods under fire of rifles and machine guns, courageously treated the wounded, inspiring the combat troops by his example, until shot through the head and killed.
