William L. Harris entered the military service in Massachusetts. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in the 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died on September 13, 1918 and is now buried in St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Near St. Remy, France, 13 September 1918. While acting as a runner, between company and battalion headquarters, under terrific shell fire, Corporal Harris carried messages without regard to personal danger, until struck and killed by a shell.
