Andrew J. Gerdin was born on October 20, 1891 in Oslo, Oslo kommune, Oslo fylke, Norway. He was an art student accepted at Harvard. He entered the military service in Illinois and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Second Lieutenant in Company K, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was Killed in Action on September 28, 1918 by a German bullet in St. Mihiel drive at the age of 26 and is now buried in St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France.
