Charles W. Cottingham was born on February 22, 1899 in Grannis, Polk County, Arkansas. He was the son of John David Cottingham and Laura McDowell Cottingham. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in the 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died on July 24, 1918 at the age of 19 in France and is now buried in Rosedale Cemetery, Ada, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, USA.
