Charles Herbert Alward was born on November 27, 1891, in Wayland, Massachusetts, the son of Annie and John. He had three brothers and two sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company I, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died on October 23, 1918 in France at the age of 26 and is now buried in South Cemetery, Wayland, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA. The American Legion Post 133 in Wayland Mass. was named after him.
