When Nathaniel S. Simpkins was born on December 14, 1885, in New York, his father, Nathaniel, was 24 and his mother, Mabel, was 21. He married Olivia Thorndike on June 28, 1911, in Manchester, Massachusetts. They had two children during their marriage. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Captain in the 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died of influenza on October 22, 1918 in France at the age of 32, after long and efficient service on the staff of the New England Division. He is now buried in Woodside Cemetery, Yarmouth Port, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, USA.
