Alvin Eugene Long was born on October 10, 1897 in Dalmatia, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I in the Headquarters Company, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on June 16, 1918 in the Battle of Belleau Wood (Bois de Belleau). Originally, he was buried in a military cemetery in France, but in 1921, his body was returned to the US, and on 26 June 1921, reburied at Stone Valley Cemetery. The American Legion Post, Herndon RD, PA, is named for him.
