Herman Rowland Gross was born on December 16, 1897 in Pennsylvania. He was the son of Herman Ludwig Gross and Florence Julia Schurch Gross. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company F, 109th Infantry, 28th Division. He died of influenza on September 6, 1918 in Magneaux, France at the age of 20 and is now buried in Fernwood Cemetery, Fernwood, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, USA.
