Carroll Hendricks Black was born on August 28, 1887 in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio. He entered the service on June 28, 1916 with Company L, 4th Ohio Inf. ONG. later with Company L, 166th US Inf., Rainbow Division. He served on the Mexican Border and sailed from Hoboken, NJ on Oct. 31, 1917 on the ship Agamemnon. He landed at Brest, France and fought in the Baccarat Sector. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Sergeant in the 166th Infantry Regiment, 42nd Infantry Division. While neutralizing gas at the bombardment of Migneville, France on June 20, 1918, he was wounded by high explosive shell which severed arteries in his ankle. He also inhaled gas. He was taken to Base Hospital and died July 6, 1918. He is now buried in Forest Rose Cemetery, Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA.
