Corporal Edward Mitchell was from Croweburg, Crawford County, Kansas.

In the 1910 census 12 year-old Edward lived with his widowed father and 5 siblings (3 older brothers, 2 younger sisters) in Washington, Crawford County, Kansas. His father and two oldest brothers were coal miners. All 6 children including the youngest, Sarah, age 5, were born in England. In the 1915 Kansas census 17 year-old Edward lived with his father and two younger sisters in Lincoln, Crawford County, KS.

Edward enlisted in 1916 and was assigned to Company I, 26th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Expeditionary Division and arrived in France in June of 1917.

The US 1st Division was near Ansauville just northeast of the Foret de la Reine in the Toule Sector from Jan – Apr 1918 before being moved to the Picardy Sector to counter the German’s spring offensive which took them to within 50 miles northeast of Paris. The 26th Infantry First Aid Station was between Bouconville and Rambucourt in March at the time Corporal Mitchell was killed. He was Killed in Action on March 17, 1918 and is now buried in St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France.
