First Division Monument (San Mihiel)
Nonsard Liberation- 16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division
When Leslie Edmond Werner was born on October 13, 1893, in Poland, Ohio, his father, Clement, was 25 and his mother, Sylvia, was 21. He had two sisters. He attended the Poland grade and high schools and had been a member of the Poland M. E. church since boyhood. Before entering the service he was chief clerk for the Adams Express company. He entered the service on May 29, 1912, going overseas with replacement troops. He was sent to the front soon afterward. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company F, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was killed in action on Sept. 12. 1918, during the fighting at St. Mihiel and was the only Poland soldier killed in action. He is now buried in Poland Riverside Cemetery, Poland, Mahoning County, Ohio, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Vigneulles, France but his surname is inscribed as Warner.He is also remembered on a memorial at Nonsard France.
