First Division Monument (San Mihiel)
Nonsard Liberation- 16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division
Roy Weigel was born on July 15, 1894. He enlisted in the Army on June 28, 1913. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a First Sergeant in Company E, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on September 13, 1918 in France and is now buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo., USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Vigneulles and Nonsard, France but his surname is inscribed as Weigerl.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Roy Weigel (ASN: 42617), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, A.E.F., near St. Mihiel, France, 12 September 1918. Sergeant Weigel showed entire disregard for his own safety in making several attempts to locate the positions of machine guns whose heavy fire was hindering the advance of his battalion. He was killed while leading a rush upon one of the guns which he had located.
