Silver Star. General Orders No. 34, Headquarters 1st Division, A. E. F., July 9, 1918: The Division Commander cites the following man for conspicuous gallantry in action: . . . Corporal Howard W. Dietrich, Headquarters Detachment, 1st Field Artillery Brigade . . . displayed conspicuous coolness, unfaltering courage, and self-sacrificing devotion to duty when exposed to great danger; in particular on the morning of June 9, 1918, he voluntarily left his shelter and exposed himself to heavy gun fire in going to the rescue of a wounded officer and taking him to a dressing station. By command of Major General Bullard: H. K. Loughry, Major, Field Artillery, National Army, Division Adjutant.

Record. Born July 14, 1896, South Bend; son of Charles W. and Mary F. (Boyer) Dietrich. Farmer, South Bend. Enlisted July 5, 1917, Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Training: Camp Robinson, Wis. Assigned to Battery F, 17th Field Artillery; transferred to Headquarters Company, 1st Field Artillery Brigade. Corporal, May 14, 1918. Overseas October 31, 1917. Battles: Sommerviller, Ansauville, Cantigny, Montdidier-Noyon, Aisne-Marne, Saizerais, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne. Died September 27, 1918, Vittel, France. Buried in Riverview Cemetery, South Bend.
