When William Gebelein was born on November 20, 1892, in Day, Wisconsin, his father, William, was 35 and his mother, Regina, was 24. He had five brothers and four sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company G, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on October 19, 1918 and is now buried in St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Gebelien.
