Private Smith was born on December 12, 1892. He was attached to Company D, 328th Infantry. After a brief period of military training in local camps, Private Smith was transferred to Company D, 18th Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces, with which unit he embarked for overseas service. He was wounded in action in France, and died as a result of his wound on October 6, 1918. He is now buried in Elmhurst Cemetery, Elberton, Elbert County, Georgia, USA.
