Walter M. Sims was born in January 1899 in Akin, Franklin County, Illinois. He enlisted in the Army on November 23, 1916 at Mt. Vernon and was sent overseas on November 15, 1917. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company D, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was wounded three times. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on October 4, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
