When David V. Buchanan was born on November 20, 1895, in Mitchell, North Carolina, his father, Thomas, was 37 and his mother, Mary, was 34. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company M, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on October 4, 1918 (at the age of 22) in France and is now buried in Union Hill Cemetery, Tipton Hill, Mitchell County, North Carolina, USA.
