When Hurley E. Wheatley was born on October 23, 1894, in Grayson, Virginia, his father, Jesse, was 38 and his mother, Drucilla, was 39. He had two brothers and five sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company L, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on October 8, 1918 (at the age of 23) in France and is now buried in Gold Hill Cemetery - Old, Independence, Grayson County, Virginia, USA. His name is also listed in Grayson County Virginia's World War I Memorial located at the Grayson County Courthouse in Independence, Virginia.
