When George William Abicht was born on February 21, 1887, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, his father, William, was 34 and his mother, Anna, was 27. He had two brothers and three sisters. He enlisted with Company B, Third Wisconsin Infantry, Wisconsin National Guard and, in September, 1917, he left with the La Crosse guardsmen for Waco, Texas, where his company was made Company B, the 128th Infantry. He sailed for France with the company February 21, 1918, and upon reaching the other side was transferred to Company L, 16th Infantry.
On July 20, while in action, Abicht received eleven shrapnel wounds. He was in hospital until the last part of August when he was permitted to rejoin his company. The last report received in La Crosse from the soldier was that he was in the battle with "The Terribles". He was Killed in Action on October 4, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
