In January, 1917, he married his old schoolmate, Geraldine Parker. He enlisted in April, 1917, and after taking a course in the training school received his commission as a First Lieutenant and was assigned to the 16th Infantry, as commander of the first platoon in active service in France. At Chateau Thierry he was gassed, and remained for some time in the hospital. In January, 1918, he was promoted to Captain. He was again about to receive promotion when he was wounded on October 4 in the big drive of the Argonne, from which he never recovered and died on November 24, 1918.
