When Joseph George Bernard Koenig was born on January 7, 1896, in Montgomery City, Missouri, his father, Bernhard, was 39 and his mother, Aleida, was 34. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private in Company D, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 (at the age of 22) in the battlefield of Chateau Thierry, France and is now buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Rhineland, Montgomery County, Missouri, USA. His name is commemorated on the Buzancy monument but his surname is incribed as Koening.
