Alfred B. Walby was born on May 3, 1892, in Wisconsin. He was the son of Gilbert Jorgensen Walby and Karen Carlson Arneson. He entered the military service in North Dakota. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company M, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as a Private.
