When Robert Obadiah Purdy was born on April 5, 1891, in South Carolina, his father, Robert, was 34 and his mother, Harriet, was 35. He had four brothers and three sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Second Lieutenant in Company M, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. He also has a marker in Sumter Cemetery, Sumter, Sumter County, South Carolina, USA.
