When Willis Hines was born on July 11, 1898 in Gales Creek, Oregon, his father, Thomas, was 24 and his mother, Alura, was 19. He had seven brothers and one sister. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company A, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 22, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France.
