When Marshall Waymon King was born on August 7, 1900, in Anderson, South Carolina, his father, William, was 33 and his mother, Amanda, was 24. He had one sister. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company F, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 27, 1918 (at the age of 17) and is now buried in Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery, Anderson, Anderson County, South Carolina, USA.
