When James Hammond Schooley was born on September 7, 1897, his father, Elmer, was 35 and his mother, Ann, was 35. He had two brothers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company I, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 19, 1918, at the age of 20, in Picardie, France and is now buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA. his marker was excavated and reser after the tree that had engulfed it was fallen by a storm in 2012.
